Administrative history

The StarPhoenix daily newspaper was created on September 12, 1928, by the merger of the Saskatoon Daily Phoenix (1902) and Daily Star (1906) newspapers. From 1928-1996 it was owned by the Clifford Sifton family. From 1996-2000 it was owned by Hollinger Newspapers, and then by CanWest Global Communications until 2008, when it was acquired by Postmedia.

In its history the newspaper's title heading has appeared in various forms, including Saskatoon Star-Phoenix and Star Phoenix, but the current presentation is StarPhoenix.

Custodial history

Records were maintained by the newspaper and transferred to the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan in several accessions beginning in 1965. In 2019, the entire collection was transferred to the City of Saskatoon Archives.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of ca. 400,000 photographs shot by StarPhoenix staff and freelance photographers, for publication in the newspaper. Fonds also contains 3.5 m of newspaper clippings (mostly photocopies) of the published images and some caption or other identifying information. Photographs are primarily black and white negatives, as well as a few prints and transparences, and increasing numbers of colour negatives in more recent years.

The collections spans the years 1945-1999, except for those from 1965-1969, which were accidentally destroyed by the newspaper, and 1987, which were not transferred to the archives may have been destroyed. There only a few photographs taken before 1948, although there are later copies of historical images dating to the 1880s.

The images document local news, events, and personalities predominantly in Saskatoon, but also from surrounding communities. Subjects include sports, recreation, arts, entertainment, education, research, social and political events, business, native affairs, agriculture, accidents and scenic views.

The images for each photo shoot of a particular event or subject were filed together, often with the relevant newspaper clipping, and ordered by date of publication, including a brief description and sometimes photographer's initials.

Fonds includes the following series:

SSP-1 -- General Photographs series (1945-1999)
SSP-2 -- Les Guthrie Photographs (1957-1964)
SSP-3 -- Exhibition and Pion-Era photographs (1959-1965)
SSP-4 -- Photographs of Staff (1959)

The fonds has been arranged into 4 series: Photographs 1948-1964, 1970-1986; Les Guthrie Photographs; Exhibition and Pion-Era Photographs, 1959-1965; and Staff Photographs, 1959.

Arrangement

Records were maintained in chronological order by the creator. Due to processing complications photographs from year to year are not numbered chronologically, (although the numbering within each year is chronological). It is not clear from existing documentation if the Les Guthrie and Exposition and Pion-Era photographs were organized as separate series by the creator or imposed by archivists when those images were processed.
