Institutionele geschiedenis

The Saskatchewan Co-operative Wheat Producers Ltd. was incorporated on 25 August 1923; but from the beginning the company was popularly known as the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (a name they legally adopted in 1953). By June 1924, 45,725 Saskatchewan farmers had signed delivery contracts with the Pool covering a total of 6,333,000 acres. From its inception, the Pool has operated as a co-operative farm organization dedicated to the improvement of the social and economic welfare of farmers and farm families. Over the years the Pool established a system of country and terminal elevators to take delivery, handle and store grains, which, until the 2001 merger of Agricore and United Grain Growers, was the largest elevator system in Canada. The Pool operates as an agent for the Canadian Wheat Board in the buying and handling of grain. In 1930 the Pool took over publication of The Western Producer, and also operated a commercial printing division under Modern Press Limited. Since 1944 the Pool has operated a system of livestock yards and marketing agencies; in 1947 they established a vegetable oil processing plant and in 1949, a flour mill. In 1963 they established a farm service department to supply fertilizer, cereal crop and forage seed, herbicides and other chemicals. Numerous other subsidiary companies have included CSP Foods, Dawn Foods Canada, CanAmera Foods, Heartland Livestock Services, XCAN, PrintWest, InfraReady Products Limited, AgPro Grain, Poundmaker AgVenture, Pacific Elevators, Westco Fertilizer, IPCO, Robin's Foods, Bioriginal, Prince Rupert Grain Ltd, PhilomBios, Regina Seed Processors, Prairie Malt Ltd., Saskatoon Livestock Sales, Lakeside Processors, Medicine Hat Feeding Co., BLL, etc. The Pool has always served as a vigorous critic of government policies and programs, and as a progressive advocate of change, submitting briefs on behalf of farmers to royal commissions, inquiries, committees and in direct discussions with governments at both provincial and national levels. One of the oldest, largest, and most successful co-operatives in Canada and for most of its history fully farmer owned and operated, in 1996 they became a publicly-traded company. In 2007, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool bought Winnipeg's Agricore United. The combined company was renamed Viterra.
