Biografie

Sergey Fedoroff was born in Daugavpils, Latvia on 20 February 1925. He was taken to Germany by the Nazis in 1943 and stayed in the post war era to begin training in medicine, first at the University of Dillingen then later at University of Tubingen. Financial difficulties forced him to abandon his studies and accept a position in the Clinical Laboratory of the IRO Resettlement Centre. Fedoroff immigrated to Canada in 1949 and joined the staff of the U of S in 1950 as a laboratory assistant in the Department of Anatomy. He resumed his studies and earned an B.A. (1953), M.A. (1955), and a Ph.d in Histology (1958), all from the U of S. His teaching career started as a demonstrator raising to Full Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy in 1964, a post he held until 1987. Dr. Fedoroff also served as Assistant Dean of Medicine, in charge of undergraduate studies, from 1970-1972. The U of S honoured Dr. Fedoroff in 1984 with a DSc and named him Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1992. In addition to many executive and organizing positions of several national and international organizations, he served as president for: the Canadian Association of Anatomists (1966-1967); the Tissue Culture Association (1968-1972); the Pan American Association of Anatomy (1972-1975); the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies (1978-1979); the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies (1978-1979); the Tissue Culture History Society (1986-1987). Dr. Fedoroff also served as chairman of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (1980-1981). His research has contributed to several advances in the science of tissue culture and neurobiology.
