History
William Riddell was born on a farm near Oakner, Manitoba in 1905. He received his public and high school education in the province. He obtained a B.A. from the University of Manitoba in 1925 and a B.Sc. in 1926. He obtained a M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Saskatchewan in 1928. In 1931 he obtained a Ph.D in Chemistry and Biology from Leland Stanford University in California.
Riddell had a busy and varied life. He was an instructor in chemistry at Regina College from 1931 to 1935, a research chemist at the Fisheries Board of Canada in the Pacific Fisheries Research Station at Prince Rupert from 1935 to 1938, a provincial analyst for Saskatchewan from 1938 to 1950, a director of the Provincial Laboratories of Saskatchewan from 1942 to 1950, a Dean of Regina College from 1950 to 1961, a principal of the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus from 1962 to 1969 and an assistant to the President of University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus from 1970 to 1973.
Riddell was active in a number of professional organizations. He served on many government and university boards, councils, and committees. He was made an officer of the Order of Canada and was awarded an honorary LL.D. by the University of Regina in 1973. Riddell died in 2001.
