Scope and content

Records created, accumulated and used by Lillian M. Russell during her employment as an Extension Specialist, Women's Activities, in the Saskatchewan Department of Co-operation and Co-operative Development. Russell was instrumental in helping establish the Saskatchewan Women's Co-operative Guild and various local guilds across the province in the 1940s. Records include correspondence, memoranda, and reports. Correspondents include Lester B. Pearson; Violet McNaughton; B.N. Arnason and T.C. Douglas. Personal correspondence and greeting cards addressed to Lillian Russell regarding her resignation from the department in 1952 are included.

Includes booklets and pamphlets issued by the Department of Co-operation and Co-operative Development, with contributions from Lillian M. Russell, as follows: Mrs. Co-op Consumer, Business Woman (September 1947); Mrs. Saskatchewan Farmer Co-operator (December 1947); Suggestions Regarding Co-operative Action By Women; and Community Canning Centres. A programme for the eleventh annual meeting of the Saskatchewan Women's Co-operative Guild Complimentary Dinner on June 5, 1951 in Moose Jaw is included. Group Medical Services First Annual Report, 1949-50, is also included.

Lillian Violet May Russell (nee Lewis) was born in 1898 in England. She emigrated to Russell, Manitoba in the early 1920s. After completing a secretarial course in Winnipeg around 1925, she was employed in Ontario before moving to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1945 to work with the Government of Saskatchewan. In 1952, she moved to St. Catherines, Ontario, where she worked until her retirement in 1972. She died on November 1, 1988.
