Biographical history

Patricia Smith was born in Cabri, Saskatchewan in 1943. She served as a Progressive Conservative member in the Saskatchewan Legislature (1982-1991) and a Cabinet minister in the Grant Devine Government (1982-1990).

Custodial history

Patricia Smith donated the records in this fonds to the Regina office, Saskatchewan Archives in two accessions in 1991: R91-242 (August 28, 1991) and R91-263 (September 27, 1991). The records originated from her ministerial office. Records created by Paul Schoenhals, Lorne Hepworth and Joan Duncan were identified in the Smith fonds at the time of arrangement.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by Patricia Smith from 1986 to 1989 in her political career as: Minister of Education; Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Minerals Corporation. This fonds also includes records created by Smith in her role as MLA for the Swift Current constituency and member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan.

The fonds includes records created by Paul Schoenhals and Lorne Hepworth, Smith's predecessors in the Energy and Mines portfolio. Also included are records created by Joan Duncan, Smith's predecessor as Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Minerals Corporation.

The types of records included are correspondence, memoranda, annual reports, briefing notes, speeches, publications, minutes and agendas, news releases, legislation, newspaper clippings, photographs, maps and posters.

Public and political records are included in this fonds.

A small volume of records created by Smith as Minister Responsible for the Status of Women (1989-1990) are located in the Raymond H. Meiklejohn fonds (F7).

This fonds is missing records Smith created in the following portfolios: Social Services; Education (1983-1985); Urban Affairs and Culture, Multiculturalism and Recreation. Also missing are Deputy Premier records, constituency records and records from her various other ministerial responsibilities.
