Name of creator
Noah Dean was a yeoman in Upper Canada and owned two hundred acres of land in the township of Hamilton. In 1808, he sent a petition to Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada regarding his land. Dean purchased the two hundred acres from Aaron Greely in 1798 for fifty pounds. He built a house there, cleared thirty acres and lived there with his family for nine years, before discovering that Greely had no claim to the land. In the petition he includes reference letters supporting his claims.
Scope and content
This fonds contains a land grant issued to Noah Dean on September 21, 1804. The grant is for 200 acres in the township of Hamilton, district of Newcastle, Upper Canada. It is for lot number 26. There is large wax seal coated with paper attached to the grant. The grant is made of parchment.
The land grant is in poor condition. There is a large seal attached to the grant that is causing the parchment to curl. The seal is attached to the parchment where it makes it difficult to fully open the page. There are watermarks on the parchment.
