History

The Moose Jaw General Hospital opened a School of Nursing in 1906. The first class of 5 nurses graduated on December 9, 1909. The last class graduated on May 3, 1970. A total of 1058 nurses graduated from the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. The Alumnae Association was formed in 1931. The first executive elected were Miss L. Carter, president; Mrs. Fitzgerald, 1st vice-president; Miss A. Meadows, 2nd vice-president; Miss A. Cheavins, recording secretary; Miss Heglin, corresponding secretary; Miss G. Winsor, treasurer. In 1953 the city of Moose Jaw and surrounding municipalities formed a body known as the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Board of Directors, and changed the name from General Hospital to Union Hospital. In 1970 the Saskatchewan government closed the small nursing schools.
