History

Robert Wayne Mitchell was born in 1936 in Preeceville, Saskatchewan. He practiced law and worked as a labour relations expert prior to his election to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1986. Mitchell served as a New Democratic Party member for Saskatoon Fairview (1986-1999) and held numerous portfolios in the Roy Romanow Government (1991-1998). After resigning from Cabinet and vacating his seat in the Saskatchewan Legislature, Mitchell became Chief Negotiator for the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (1999) and was later appointed police complaints investigator for Saskatchewan (2004) and chair of the Saskatchewan Public Complaints Commission (2009). Mitchell died in 2016.
