Lorne Allan Kopelchuk was born on August 4, 1938 in Canora, Saskatchewan to Steven and Susan (Procyshen) Kopelchuk. He studied at the College of Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan.

Kopelchuk farmed and worked as an office manager prior to his election to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1986. He served as a Progressive Conservative member for the Canora constituency from 1986 to 1991. He also served in the Grant Devine Government as Minister of Parks and Renewable Resources (October 3, 1989 to November 1, 1991); Minister of Northern Affairs (October 3, 1989 to January 1, 1991) and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Wetland Conservation Corporation (1990-1991). Kopelchuk was defeated by Darrel Cunningham of the New Democratic Party in the October 21, 1991 general election. Kopelchuk currently (2010) resides in Canora.

Kopelchuk married Doris Samuels on August 9, 1961. The Kopelchuks have four children: Karen; Kathryn; Karolyn; and Kristen.
