Notice biographique

Jean Elizabeth Murray was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 29 April 1901. She came to Saskatoon with her parents and two sisters in 1909 and obtained her early education at King Edward and Victoria schools and Nutana Collegiate. She attended the University of Saskatchewan, earning both a B.A. (1922) and M.A. (1923). She continued her postgraduate education, earning a second M.A. from the University of Toronto (1924) and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1936). After working at the University of Alberta, Jean Murray joined the University of Saskatchewan as an Instructor in History in 1931, and gradually rose through the ranks, becoming Full Professor in 1966. At her retirement in 1968 she was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus of History. Dr. Murray died in 1981.

Historique de la conservation

Over a period of many years, Dr. Jean Murray fell heir to the private papers of her immediate family. It would appear that in many instances files in this collection not only supplement, but were also originally an integral part of, W.C. Murray's official presidential records. In addition, there are files which appear to formerly have been the property of Drs. E.H. Oliver and A.S. Morton.

Portée et contenu

This fonds contains the personal correspondence, office, and research files of the Murray family, including W.C. Murray (President, University of Saskatchewan), his wife Christina, and his daughters, Christina, Dr. Lucy H. Murray (Professor of English, Regina College), and Dr. Jean E. Murray.

Classement

Although the collection had little internal organization when received, wherever possible the original order has been retained. An attempt has been made to rationalize the arrangement of the collection by separating it into distinct series, first by original owner and then by category within each unit. The major series are as follows:

                A. W. C. Murray
B. (Mrs.) Christina Murray
C. Christina Murray
D. Lucy H. Murray
E. Jean E. Murray
