Biographical history

Randall Neil Nelson was born on June 6, 1926 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan to Louis and Gina Nelson. He was raised on the family farm near Ruthilda and attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he obtained Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. Nelson worked as a teacher at Naisberry School (1950-1954) and in Spalding, Simpson and Yorkton.

Nelson's political career began in 1975, when he was elected to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly. He served as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member for the Yorkton constituency until 1982, when he was defeated in the general election. Nelson currently (2011) resides in Saskatoon.

Nelson married Isobelle Louise Long on December 30, 1948. The Nelsons have five children: Helen, Frederick, Byron, Carolyn and Nancy.

Custodial history

Randall Nelson donated these records to the Regina office, Saskatchewan Archives in two accessions in 1989 and 2011: R89-274 (July 11, 1989) and 2011-226 (November 15, 2011).

Scope and content

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by Randy Nelson as a member of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) and as the NDP member of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly for the Yorkton constituency. The fonds also includes a small volume of personal records relating to his teaching career and medals he was awarded.

The types of records included are correspondence, memoranda, brochures and publications, invitations, minutes, news releases, programmes, newsletters, constituency maps, a photograph and a 2005 local history book entitled "Naisberry School and District".

No series assignment was applied to the records in this fonds.
