Gordon Edwin Dirks was born on June 22, 1947 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Menno Dirks and Verna Schmidt. He earned a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1974. Dirks holds a postgraduate diploma in Educational Administration (1978) and a Masters of Education degree (1980) from the University of Regina. He has also taken doctoral studies at the Canadian Bible College and Theological Seminary in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Prior to his entry into politics, Dirks worked as a public school teacher and principal. He was Registrar at the Canadian Bible College from 1979 to 1982.
Dirks was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1982 and served as a Progressive Conservative MLA for the Regina Rosemont constituency until 1986. Dirks served in the Grant Devine Government as Minister of Social Services (1983-1986) and Minister of Urban Affairs (1985-1986). He was Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission (1985-1986); Public Service Commission (1985-1986); Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (1985-1986); Saskatchewan Assessment Authority (1985-1986); Local Government Board (1985-1986); Municipal Water Assistance Board (1985-1986); and Provincial Planning Appeals Board (1985-1986).
After losing his seat in the 1986 provincial general election to Robert Lyons (NDP), Dirks became Vice-President of the Canadian Bible College and Seminary. In 1990, he moved to Edmonton, Alberta and became Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services with Alberta Family and Social Services. Dirks served as Executive Pastor of Beulah Alliance Church in Edmonton from 1993 to 1996, when he became President of Rocky Mountain College in Calgary, Alberta.
Dirks is currently (2006) President and Associate Professor of Educational Ministries at Rocky Mountain College. He also serves as a trustee on the Calgary Board of Education.
Dirks married Evangeline Joy Reid on October 9, 1971. They have two children: Christopher and Michael.
