Hartford Allan "Hal" Lewis was born in Wolsley, Saskatchewan on 13 May 1905. Lewis initially enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in 1922, intending to become a dentist; but after two years in the pre-medical course, he transferred to agricultural engineering, convocating in 1928. In 1939 Lewis accepted his first appointment as a sessional lecture with the Department of Agricultural Engineering. From 1939 until his retirement in 1962, Lewis divided his time between teaching at the University and farming near Grey, Saskatchewan.
This collection contains material gathered from various sources by H.A. Lewis. Much of the material appears to have originated from Professors A.R. Greig and Evan A. Hardy of the University of Saskatchewan Department of Agricultural Engineering; Lewis collected this material when it became evident it would otherwise have been discarded.
