History

Duncan F. Robertson was born in Allan, Saskatchewan in 1924, lived near Bradwell, SK and went to school there. Following wartime army service overseas he attended the University of Saskatchewan. After graduation he rejoined the army, serving Canada, Germany and Vietnam, retiring in 1957. He then studied at St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto, obtaining a degree in Theology in 1961, followed by a year at Regina Cleri Seminary, Regina. In 1971 he graduated from the University of British Columbia School of Librarianship and in 1976 received an M.A. in history from the University of Saskatchewan. Robertson also served for some years as Head Librarian of the Kelsey Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in Saskatoon. In 1977, Duncan Robertson was commissioned by the Diocese of Saskatoon to prepare a chronological history of the diocese as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the diocese in 1983. The Sword of St. Paul: A History of the Diocese of Saskatoon 1933-1983 was published in 1982. The Duncan Robertson fonds contains the research materials used in the preparation of the book. From 1983 to 1988, Robertson conducted research into the life and career of Fr. Alexis André, OMI and wrote an article on this topic for publication in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.
