Biographical history

Dennis Gruending was born on May 18, 1948 in St. Benedict, Saskatchewan. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters in Journalism from Carleton University. From 1971 to 1989 Gruending worked as a journalist in print, radio and television primarily in Saskatchewan. He moved to Ontario to pursue his writing career in the 1990s and briefly served as NDP member from Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar following a 1999 federal by-election.

Author of Promises to Keep: A Political Biography of Allan Blakeney (Western Producer Prairie Books, 1990); Great Canadian Speeches (2004); and Emmett Hall: Establishment Radical (rev. 2005) among other works in non-fiction, poetry and literary criticism, Gruending has maintained his Saskatchewan roots. He is currently (2006) involved in writing, research and communications planning in Ottawa, Ontario.

Custodial history

Dennis Gruending donated these records to the Regina office, Saskatchewan Archives in three accessions between 1992 and 1993: R92-285 (November 4, 1992); R92-302 (November 26, 1992); and R93-013 (January 29, 1993).

Scope and content

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by Dennis Gruending during the course of his career as a writer, journalist, radio host and producer, and television reporter in Regina, Saskatchewan. Some material in the fonds also relates to his writing career in Ottawa, Ontario.

The types of records included are research notes, general correspondence, transcripts, interview question sheets, sound recordings of interviews, photographs, manuscript drafts, speeches, radio broadcasts, editor and reviewer correspondence. The records principally relate to Gruending's books Gringo: Poems and Journals from Latin America (Coteau Books, 1983); Emmett Hall: Establishment Radical (Macmillan of Canada, 1985 ed.); and Promises to Keep: A Political Biography of Allan Blakeney (Western Producer Prairie Books, 1990).

Also included is material related to Gruending's work with CBC radio and television, and his freelance journalism in Saskatchewan.

Gruending's records created as a federal New Democratic Party Member of Parliament for the Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar constituency are not included in the fonds.

The records described in 1992 consist of seven series: Emmett Hall: Establishment Radical; Promises to Keep: A Political Biography of Allan Blakeney; Speeches and Workshops; Organizations; Writing; Radio and Television Journalism; Miscellaneous. An Addendum series including CBC radio material, speeches and workshop material and poetry readings was added in 1993.

The sound recordings and photographs described in 2002 and 2003 relate to the earlier material in the fonds. A list and transcripts to interviews conducted for Promises to Keep has been added at File II.54.
