Foster, William W., Major-General

William Wasbrough (Billy) Foster (1875-1954) was born in Bristol, England in 1876 and immigrated to Canada in 1894. In a 1913 by-election, Foster was elected Conservative member for The Islands in the British Columbia legislature. In November 1914, he joined the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. After distinguishing himself at the Somme and Vimy Ridge, he was promoted to command the 52nd Battalion in August 1917. Aside from a temporary post to command the 9th Infantry Brigade in September 1918, Foster remained with the 52nd until the end of the war. He received two DSO Bars, was twice wounded and was five times mentioned in dispatches. Foster was appointed Chief Constable of the Vancouver Police Department on 3 January 1935. Foster remained active in veteran affairs during peacetime and was the president of the Royal Canadian Legion from 1938 to 1940. His career as chief constable was cut short when he was called off to war in 1939 and was promoted to major general. Foster died in 1954 in Vancouver.

Fowke, Lawrence Carroll, 1941- . (Professor of Biology)

Lawrence Carroll Fowke was born 6 June 1941 in Toronto, and raised in Saskatoon. He earned a BA (Biology) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1963 and his PhD from Carleton University (1968) in plant cytology. Following a two year postdoctoral fellowship at the Australian National University in Canberra, in 1970 he joined the Department of Biology at the University of Saskatchewan as an assistant professor. By 1979 was a full professor. Author of over 160 research papers, Fowke has been appointed visiting scientist at universities and research institutes in Australia, Switzerland, Sweden and England. He has been awarded the Distinguished Researcher Award and named Jarislowsky Chair in Biotechnology and Rawson Professor in Biology. He was recognized as an ISI Highly Cited Researcher in the plant and animal category. Dr. Fowke served as an editor for Plant Cell Reports and has served on the editorial boards of three other botanical and cell biology journals. He was nominated three times for the USSU Teaching Excellence Award. In 2006, the University of Saskatchewan awarded him an earned Doctor of Science degree.

Fowke, Vernon Clifford, 1907-1966 (Professor of Economics)

Vernon Clifford Fowke, born on 5 May 1907 in the district of Parry Sound, Ontario, grew up in Melville, Saskatchewan and attended Regina College for his secondary education. He went on to the University of Saskatchewan where he earned both a B.A. (1928) and MA. (1929). In 1942 he was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Dr. Fowke also studied at the Universities of Chicago and Toronto and the London School of Economics. He joined the faculty of the U of S as an Instructor in Economics in 1930 and became full Professor in 1948. Dr. Fowke spent 1957-1958 at the University of Toronto as the Harold Innis Visiting Research Professor and in 1962 was named Britnell Professor of Economics at the U of S. Dr. Fowke was a prolific writer, authoring three books and over seventy articles. He also served in various capacities on several royal commissions and government sponsored committees. In February of 1966, Dr. Fowke died suddenly while on sabbatical at Stanford, California.

Fowler, Christine Mary Rutherford

Christine Mary Rutherford Fowler is the third generation in a family of scientists of extraordinarily high international reputation. Her main areas of research include seismic refraction, thermal models, sedimentary basins and continental crust. She is co-author with E.G. Nisbet on several papers: her latest book, "The Solid Earth", quickly became the standard text in geophysics, and is used at MIT and CalTech, etc.
