Cecil Fennell was born October 13, 1920 to Clare Fennel and Louise Fennell (nee Taylor) in Melfort, Saskatchewan. He was married to his wife, Helen, on May 1, 1944 at the Melfort United Church. Together they would have five children: Dennis, Gail, Brenda, Barry and Blaine. Cecil farmed throughout his life, and worked for seven years as a bookkeeper at the Melfort Research Station.

Flett, Dagmar

Dagmar Flett (nee Nygaard) and twin brother Chris Nygaard were born January 31, 1908 in Denmark to Walter Christian Nygaard and Kristina Nygaard (nee Merk). The Nygaard family emigrated from Denmark to the Belgrave, Saskatchewan district in May of 1914 when Dagmar was six years old. They were met by Dagmar's uncle Otto at the Melfort train station. Dagmar married James ("Jim") Flett on June 25, 1929, with whom she would have three children. Following the marriage, the Fletts lived beside the livery barn on Saskatchewan Avenue across from the railway station. While living in this location, they had a taxi business which included one car and a team of horses during the winter. This business was continued until 1939. At one point, the barn caught fire, but as only the loft was damaged, the lower level was still usable and the business was able to continue. During the 1940s, Dagmar managed the boarding house at the Melfort Experimental Farm. The Flett family moved to British Columbia in 1956, but returned to Melfort in 1992.

Aikenhead, Wesley

Wesley Aikenhead was born to Jim Aikenhead and Amanda Aikenhead (Eastman). Wesley worked as an insurance agent. As well, he was a Light Infantry Major in the Reserve Army based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Wesley was foundational in the development in the Melfort and District Museum. His large donations of artifacts made up the bulk of the museum's early collection. Wesley's grandfather, Peter Aikenhead, and his family came to the Melfort area from Ontario in 1982. The following year Peter and two of his sons, including Wesley's father Jim, homesteaded in the area. Jim Aikenhead's homestead was located at the South Quarter of Section 4, Township 45, Range 18.

The Melfort Historical Society was formed in 1971 to set up a display of pioneer artifacts to be shown at the Melfort Exhibition, in celebration of a Melfort Homecoming event. The committee was made up of members of the Melfort Agricultrual Society. The first member were as follows: Bill Korolak- Chairman, Cora Carlton- Vice-Chairman, Marg Grainger- Secretary, Emma Whittome, Ted Morton, Roy Monsees, and Charles Koopman. In 1973 the committe felt teh need for a more permenant museum and development o a pioneer village site began. The offical openning of the Melfort Pioneer Museum was July 20, 1973. The Melfort Historical Society was disolved in 198 and seeked help from the Melfort and district community. Together they formed the Melfort and District Historical Society. In 198____ the Melfort and District Historical Society became _____ and the museum was renamed the Melfort and District Museum.

Sons of England Benefit Society

The Sons of England Benefit Society was founded by George Clatworthy in Toronto in 1874 originally to provide cooperative insurance and purchase of burial plots. The society was organized into local lodges and served mainly working class families. It became a society to encourage patriotism, to promote loyalty to the monarchy and to provide assistance to particular settlers within the Society’s mandate.

The organizing meeting of the Sons of England Benefit Society in Moose Jaw was held on May 28, 1904. Twenty Englishmen were present. The first executive elected were J. Crookall, president; R.F. Jackson, vice-president; E.B. Pragnell, secretary; E. Dean, chaplain; W.H. Wardell, treasurer. It was decided to name the lodge “The Moose Jaw Lodge #263 of the Sons of England Benefit Society”. Meetings were held every second and fourth Saturday.

The Society in Canada ceased to exist in 1971.

St. Micheal's Indian Residential School (Duck Lake, Saskatchewan)

A Roman Catholic school that was built in May 1894. Children were taught in English with an emphasis on industry rather than scholarship. The original school burned down in 1927 but was rebuilt. In the 1960s, administrative control transferred to Band control. The school was closed in 1996.

Greyeyes-Steele, Flora

Flora Jeanne Greyeyes was born on July 13, 1914 at home on Muskeg Lake Cree Nation. She is one of 18 children of Cecile (nee White) and James Greyeyes. Flora was sent to St Michael's Indian Residential School in Duck Lake in 1922 where she stayed until contracting tuberculosis in 1925 or 1926, she was then sent to the Fort Qu'Appelle Sanatorium. After her release from the Sanatorium, Flora returned home to Muskeg Lake Cree Nation to help out with home life and working on the small family farm. On October 19, 1942, Flora enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force making her one of the first First Nations women to join the Royal Canadian Air-Force (RCAF). She stayed with the RCAF until September 15, 1945 with the rank of Leading Aircraft-woman upon retirement; Flora also received the Canadian Volunteer Service and War Medal 1939-45. Flora married David Greyeyes-Steele a fellow veteran and together they had eight children (James Ronald 1946, Barbara Ann 1948, Beverly Ann 1949, Debra Ann 1951, twins Diana Lynn and Deanna Jeanne 1952, David Winston 1954 and Sarah Sandra in 1958). David took a job with Indian Affairs in 1959 becoming Director of the Maritime, Alberta and then Saskatchewan regions, due to David's job the family lived in many places across Canada including Saskatchewan, Alberta, The North West Territories, Nova Scotia and Ontario. Flora and David settled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan after David's retirement and resided there until his passing on July 20, 1996. After Flora was widowed she moved back to her home community of Muskeg Lake Cree Nation with her daughter Deanna.
She passed away March 3, 2008.
